A queue, a counter, a glass partition, a row of chairs for waiting. That logic no longer holds — not because interior design trends have shifted, but because the function of the physical branch itself has changed.

Why the old branch model no longer works

Most routine operations — transfers, utility payments, top-ups, even parts of the loan process — are now handled by clients through mobile apps, without ever leaving home. Banks are increasingly revising fees for cash-desk service and shifting part of these operations to partner points — shops, post offices — to reduce the cost of maintaining their own branch network.

This means one thing: if a client still comes into a branch in person, it’s no longer “a transaction for the sake of a transaction.” They’ve come for something the app can’t provide — a mortgage consultation, opening a business account, resolving a non-standard situation, building trust around a complex financial decision. The design of the space needs to reflect that.

From “counters” to “zones”

The key shift in layout is moving away from the conveyor-belt model of “queue → counter” toward zoning based on the type of interaction:

Fast-transaction zone — compact, with a minimal number of physical desks, often combined with ATM/ITM terminals and self-service areas.

Consultation zone — semi-enclosed or enclosed offices/pods for conversations about mortgages, investments, and business products, where privacy and an unhurried pace matter.

Client/lounge zone — a waiting area that no longer looks like a “waiting room,” but rather a space where it’s pleasant to spend a few minutes: comfortable furniture, coffee, Wi-Fi.

Digital zone — interactive screens, tablets for setting up products, sometimes a dedicated space for demonstrating the mobile app to new clients.

Physically, this means fewer square metres dedicated to operations and more devoted to space for conversation and trust.

Design as a tool for trust, not just aesthetics

As basic operations move online, the physical branch becomes the bank’s most powerful tool for in-person brand communication. The same principles that apply to corporate office design apply here:

Materials and lighting create a sense of stability — which is why banks are increasingly choosing warm materials over “cold corporate” ones: wood, textiles, soft lighting instead of uniform fluorescent light.

Open layouts lower the barrier between client and employee: the classic glass partition between “client and teller” is giving way to open desks and a “sit side by side, not across from each other” format.

A technology showcase: interactive screens, charging stations, and sometimes branded merchandising elements that work for brand recognition just as well as advertising.

Fewer branches, but a higher standard for each one

Banks are reducing the number of physical locations, but that doesn’t mean cutting corners on the quality of the branches that remain. On the contrary: when the network is smaller, every branch becomes a flagship location that has to match the bank’s new positioning. This applies both to banking hubs inside business centres and to flagship branches in the city centre, where a client should feel invited to a serious conversation — not just dropping off a bill.

For a bank, this means a different kind of investment: not in the number of counters, but in the quality of the space — plus layout flexibility built in from the start, since the format of client interaction keeps changing faster than before.

What this means at the renovation stage

In practical terms, for the team handling a branch fit-out, this translates into several specific project requirements:

Flexible partitions instead of load-bearing walls — so the ratio of “transaction zone / consultation zone” can be adjusted without a new renovation.

Engineering capacity built in for technology — enough power and network points for interactive screens, self-service kiosks, and video-conferencing systems in consultation rooms.

Acoustic solutions for semi-enclosed meeting zones, where clients discuss confidential financial matters.

Adjustable lighting for different scenarios — from a “quick transaction” to a “long consultation.”

The next-generation bank branch is no longer a place people visit out of necessity, but a space the company deliberately designs as part of the client experience.
